Abstract

Abstract: Two forms of influenza virus major nucleocapsid protein with MW 56,000 (NP56) and 53,000 (NP53) were revealed in infected cells and in the virions. NP53 was a secondary product of NP56 and accumulated in infected cells late in infection. Peptide mapping demonstrated that NP6 is a cleaved form of NP56. NP53 was found in the cells infected with different influenza A viruses, WSN (HON1), PR8 (HONI), FM1 (HlNl), FW/50 (HlN1), USSR 90 77 (HIND, Singapore (H2N2), England (H2N2), and Hong Kong (H3N2). NP56 å NP53 modification was a host-dependent event being readily expressed in chicken fibroblasts and porcine kidney embryo cells, to a lesser degree in MDCK cells, and greatly reduced in HeLa cells. The virions possessed NP53 as a minor component suggesting that RNPs containing NP56 but not NP53 are preferentially involved in budding process.
